France Refuses to remove ‘Synthetic’ term related to lab Grown Diamond
French Government representatives made it clear in a recent announcement to stand by the term ‘Synthetic’ used related to lab Grown Diamonds. The Natural Diamond sector has been lobbying for the use of the term ‘Synthetic’ referring to lab grown Diamonds for quite some time and this announcement means that French retailers must mention the term ‘synthetic’ while referring to diamonds that are man made. The French government while making the announcement said that the term ‘Synthetic’ is made mandatory in the country to prevent confusion and encourage transparency while conducting a jewellery sale. The French Government's stand on this issue differs from US Federal Trade Commissions. In 2018 the FTC removed ‘Synthetic’ from its list of recommended terms concerning Lab Grown Diamonds explaining that consumers might mistake lab grown diamonds to non-diamond simulants such as Cubic Zirconia. The French Government however is allowing French jewellery advertisers to use lab grown diamonds while advertising their products outside the French Territory. |
